Woolpower innovative products are made from Merino wool. They not only provide warmth and comfort, but are also durable.
In this blog post, we show how Woolpower protects you from the elements and why Merino wool is the logical choice for professionals working outdoors.
The 3-layer principle: The key to keeping warm
Woolpower follows the proven 3-layer principle to ensure your body stays supremely warm, even in the most extreme conditions:
- Base Layer: This layer wicks moisture and keeps you warm in winter, but cool in summer. Cotton is less suitable as a base layer, as it absorbs and retains moisture quickly. Polyester and Merino wool are better suited because they wick the moisture away from your body, keeping you dry. Merino wool has the added advantage that it does not retain odours. This is often not the case with a lower-priced polyester shirt.
- Mid-Layer: This layer insulates, retains your body heat, but ensures that sweat is wicked away. Woolpower products, such as the 400 and 600 gram mid-layers, offer excellent insulation due to the high air content in the fibres.
- Outer layer: This third layer provides protection against rain, wind and snow and should preferably be breathable. It is advisable to combine a Woolpower base and mid-layer with water vapour permeable wind and waterproof clothing.
Why Merino wool?
Merino wool isn't just ordinary wool. It is sourced from sheep in Argentina and Uruguay, and offers a number of significant advantages over traditional wool:
- Superior softness: Traditional wool can often be scratchy because the fibres are thicker (larger than 28 microns), but Merino wool is much finer and softer, which greatly increases wearer comfort.
- Antibacterial: Merino wool has natural antibacterial properties. This means that odours are minimised, which is especially convenient if you work long days without the facilities available to regularly wash your clothing.
- Moisture regulation: Merino wool can absorb moisture without feeling damp. It wicks away the moisture from the body and keeps you warm and dry, even when you sweat.
- Natural and sustainable: Merino wool is a completely natural product, therefore making it an environmentally friendly choice. It is biodegradable, and offers an alternative to synthetic fabrics that are often less breathable.

Heat and insulation: the secret of air
What makes Woolpower clothing truly unique is the way the Merino wool fibre is woven. Thanks to a special weaving technique, the fabric contains no less than 80% air, which ensures maximum insulation. The air in the fibres acts as a buffer that retains your body heat and prevents it from dissipating. Because there are few contact points between the clothing and the skin, the heat stays where it's needed: With you.
Low maintenance
One of the great advantages of Woolpower Merino wool is that it does not need to be washed often. The antibacterial properties of the wool ensure that clothes remain fresh, even after being worn. In many cases, airing the clothes is sufficient. Nevertheless, if you prefer to wash the clothes, this can be done in water up to 60°C, without any deterioration in the quality of the fabric.
Durable clothing for a professional work environment
Wool in itself is not particularly strong, but because Woolpower combines the natural benefits of Merino wool with synthetic fibres (such as polyamide and polyester), their clothing is stronger and more durable. Although synthetic fabrics are quicker to accumulate odours, Woolpower limits this by using synthetics only on the outside of the clothing. This preserves the breathability and anti-bacterial properties of the wool, while making the clothing more resistant to wear.
Important to know: Woolpower recommends that their clothing is not worn to fit too tightly, as this will reduce the air layer that provides insulation. In addition, light pilling (small bubbles on the fabric) is normal, and does not affect the performance of the clothing.
